On 1st April 2020 it became illegal for landlords to continue to let a property, or grant a new tenancy (including an extension or renewal), where the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is below band E - the minimum level of energy efficiency for private rented properties. From 2025, that threshold will increase to band C which in some cases will be a huge jump.
We caught up with Craig Bowling an EPC assessor from VeriSmart to discuss the changes and bring you up to speed with the latest regulations, and why it is important to act now to avoid getting caught out later with some potentially large bills.
You can check whether your property has an EPC here -
